Let’s face it; no matter how disciplined we are, this is the time of year when all those good, healthy habits seem to go out the window.
Personally, I’m all for a bit of seasonal cheer, and as my small gift to you, here are a few tips to help you minimise at least some of the damage.
* Hydrate. Those 2-3 L water a day are especially important if you’re on the drink more than usual.
* Eat breakfast – the most important meal of the day, it kick-starts your metabolism. Porridge with chopped bananas is always a favourite this time of year.
* If you’re having a drink, do so in moderation.
* Going out to party? Then make the most of it and dance your little socks off. It’s a great way to burn off those unwanted calories.
* On Christmas day, get back to playing those traditional family games such as Charades or Twister, they involve everyone and you’ll burn calories at the same time. Or move with the times and get interactive with Nintendo Wii and Xbox connect. Active gaming is the at-home exercise of the future. Just make sure it’s not immediately after your third helping of Christmas Pud. And if you’re planning to be particularly enthusiastic, remember that stretching is important for indoor athletes, too.
* Finally, if you’re given a cheeky gift of chocolates, sweets or cookies, resist the temptation, pass on the love and re-gift. After all, it is better to give than to receive.
So have a very merry Christmas – just remember that while there are few things that go together like Christmas pud and brandy butter, New Year and resolutions is one of them!
